Colosseum, in the past, allowed more than 50000 people to witness the exhibitions of exotic animals, executions of prisioners, gladiator fights etc. These were a source of entertainment for the Romans. 
To avoid the long ticket queue, visitors can arrive early in the morning or buy an entrance ticket in the Palatine Hill as it is less crowded. Roma Pass also allows free entry to the Colosseum.
