Escadaria Selaron, the work of Chilean-born artist Jorge Selarón, is a set of world-famous steps in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The vivid and unique tiles as well as mirriors were initially designed by Selaron but later tourists also start sending tiles from their country which further increased its popularity. Currently, Escadaria Selaron is the most distinctive landmark in Rio de Janeiro.

Escadaria Selaron is 125 meters of steps adorned with 2000 colorful tiles, mirrors and ceramics. It is located between neighborhoods of Lapa and Santa Teresa. Initiated by Jorge Selarón, these steps signify inspiration for the people. People from around the world supported by him tile from all over the world. The stairs feature tiles from at least 60 different countries.

The steps
Escadaria Selaron runs from Joaquim Silva street and Pinto Martins street, officially known as Manuel Carneiro street. Selaron kept on changing it declaring the work as an ever evolving piece of art. Selaron claimed that "This crazy and unique dream will only end on the day of my death".

 

International recognition
These stairs have been featured in National Geographic Channel, American Express, Coca-Cola, Kellogg's Corn Flakes, Time and Playboy. Their appearace have also been seen on music videos such as Snoop Dogg's Beautiful.
