Mirabell Palace was built in 1606 by prince-archbishop Wolf Dietrich for his beloved Salome Alt. Mirabell is a woman’s name from Italy, a compilation of two words: mirabile “admirable” and bella “beautiful”. Its Marble Hall is the “most beautiful wedding halls in the world”.
The Baroque style Mirabell Gardens give a peek into the overall historical ensemble of the city. Mirabell Garden houses
- The Pegasus Fountain featuring a sculpture of the horse, Pegasus,
- the Grand Fountain (the fountain pool) with four groups of figures symbolizing fire, air, earth and water
- The Hedge Theater
- The Dwarf Garden
- The Rose Garden with its ornamental rose beds
- The Orangery functions today as a palm house
Mirabell Gardens, along with the Felsenreitschule and Nonnberg Convent, is one of the most important shooting locations from the famous Hollywood musical “The Sound of Music”.
