Piha Beach is one of the most popular day trips for Auckland locals. The beach is surrounded by cliffs and wild subtropical rain forest and it is famous for black sand shores and rolling surf.
On the stretch of shore along Piha Beach, Lion Rock separates the beach into its north and south parts. South part is closer to town and is more popular.
Local wildlife such as oysters and penguins marks the shoreline. The rolling surf makes this beach a popular spot for experienced surfers although it is unsafe for casual swimming.
