Three main rivers are used for rafting and river sledging in the Rotorua region: Kaituna River, Rangitaiki River and the Wairoa River . Rafting in Rotorua is a great way to get the adrenaline pumping & experience exciting rapids.
The Rotorua White Water Rafting companies use a number of rivers with different grades of difficulty.
Kaituna : (Rapids & rocks, belongs to difficult category) about 20mins out of Rotorua city near Okere Falls.
Rangitaiki : (White water, waves, drops, rocks) 1hr drive to Murupara
Lower Rangitaiki : (Leisurely rippling water with rolling rapids and no obstacles) just over 1hr plus a bit more via Murupara
Wairoa : Grade 2-5 1hr drive from Rotorua via Pyes Pa Rd , only open 26 days a year on specific dates.
Lower Mohaka : Grade 4-5 2hrs drive, past Taupo heading to Napier
Upper Mohaka : Grade 2-3 Just over 1hrs drive to Taupo
Mokau : Grade 4, 3hrs drive. Meeting place is 2hrs south-west of Rotorua.
Motu : Grade 3-4, 2hrs drive to Opotiki
Tongariro : Grade 3, about 2hrs drive through Taupo to Turangi.
