Robben Island is the place where Nelson Mandela was imprisoned for 18 years. Robben Island is listed in South African National Heritage Site as well as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is famous for housing hospital, mental institution, leper colony and military base in the past.
Robben Island offers daily tours. The tour begins at the Nelson Mandela Gateway at the V&A Waterfront. An ex-prisoner gives a guided tour sharing insights into the island's history. Tours leave Cape Town four times a day, and the trip includes a bus tour of the island and a visit to the prison.
