Malia is the busy beach resort, the loudest on Crete. Apart from having the remains of a palace, it is the best coastal spots on Crete for seeing migrating birds in spring and autumn.
Malia Palace is surrounded by sea on one side and on the other side has ruins of a big settlement. There is also a burial site known as Chrysolakkos, with treasures found in the tombs now on display in the Archaeological Museum in Irakleio.
To the east of the site there is the village of Milatos which has the Milatos Cave, a memorial to a massacre that took place here in 1823 during the War of Independence against the Turks.
